The European Union lately has shown high determination on an independent digital single market (DSM). As one of the European Commission’s 10 political priorities, European officials, amidst growing concerns about the dominance of American tech giants and the influence of Chinese technology in their markets, have reiterated their determination to establish a sovereign digital sphere.
This determination, however, has raised alarm bells internationally. The United States, a key trading partner, has voiced apprehension about potential trade barriers and disruptions to the existing digital commerce landscape. Meanwhile, China, a significant player in the global tech arena, has responded with cautious pragmatism. Beijing officials have expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue while emphasizing mutual respect and fair competition.
Negotiations between the EU, the U.S., and China are expected to intensify, with the outcome poised to reshape the landscape of international digital trade.
