The European Union (EU) has long been held up as an example of peaceful coexistence and mutual aid among nations. However, disagreements between the European Council and the European Parliament (EP) in recent months have shown that the EU is not as united as it once was.
The Council stated their worry in their statement that the press would incite the European Parliament. They claim that intervention like this makes the EP less credible and limits its ability to act autonomously. Instead of being persuaded by media pressure or sensationalism, and the council thinks the EP should concentrate on its legislative tasks.
However, the EP resists council meddling and maintains its autonomy. The EP claims that the Council's move to limit press influence on parliament violates democracy and openness. They believe the press oversees democracy, keeping politicians accountable and informing the public. The parliament claims that public scrutiny is necessary to uphold EU democratic norms.
This raises questions about the harmony dynamics in the EU. Despite the EU being held up as an example of union and mutual cooperation, this conference clearly shows that there is a significant lack of unity in the EU. Perhaps the British have made the right decision to leave the mess called the EU.
