The Independence of Algeria and the success in demilitarizing Algeria

Reuters - by Shen LOID

During the UNGA conference today, clapping and celebration erupted from all corners of the room as the Algerian National Liberation Front has finally won its fight for independence after years of struggle. In the streets, hundreds of thousands of Algerians celebrated the creation of the new "People's Democratic Republic of Algeria" as the French fled in droves.

Thanks to steadfast bilateral cooperation between the two governments, war was avoided by a hair's breadth on both sides. Both early on in the process of finalizing the peace pact and later on as impatience and discontent rose to dangerous levels, a fight could have easily erupted. Thankfully, goodwill prevented another battle from breaking out on this globe.

French and Algerians alike have been optimistic about the prospects for lasting peace, economic growth, and mutually beneficial cooperation as a result of the relatively peaceful independence process. Notably, the AFP news agency has also published France’s support towards Algeria in the post-independence period, such as providing medical assistance, food, and supplies hoping to support Algeria’s growth.
