Recognising France's responsibility for the conflicts in Algeria, the delegate from France calls for international recognition and support for the country’s process of mitigating the consequences of its long-term colonial rule in Algeria.
It is essential to point out that one of France's most notable efforts to settle down with Algeria was the Evian Accords. Signed in 1962, the accords marked the end of the Algerian War and paved the way for Algerian independence. The accords were reached after a series of negotiations between France and Algeria's National Liberation Front (FLN), which had been fighting for independence. The agreement included amnesty for FLN fighters, compensation for French settlers who wished to leave Algeria, and a guarantee of French commercial interests in Algeria.
France's diplomatic relations with its former colonies also played a crucial role in Africa's decolonization. Unlike other European powers, France maintained close ties with its former colonies, providing aid and support to many newly independent African nations. France also worked to establish francophone institutions, such as the Francophonie and the French Development Agency, to support its former colonies' economic development.
France's efforts to settle with Algeria and its diplomatic relations with its former colonies played a significant role in Africa's decolonization. By prioritizing stability and economic development, France was able to maintain its influence in Africa while avoiding the violence and chaos that characterized other European powers' withdrawal from the continent. While there are valid criticisms of France's colonial legacy in Africa, it's essential to recognize the positive contributions France made to the continent's decolonization and development.
